Vegetable table

Welcome spring

As our spring project and an extension of Callum’s birthday present, I ordered Callum a planting table from Jasper and George made from recycled wood. The plan was to plant a vegetable garden with some of the seeds and to get some seedlings. With the guidance of Aunty Kim we set out to plan the garden using companion planting to aid in keeping out pests. For this purpose we planted marigolds between the lettuce and other plants.

We planted in rows with lettuce seedlings at the windiest end to protect the smaller seedlings. In the middle we planted radish’s as the sprout and grow quickly, a nice idea for young gardners. We also planted carrot seeds as well as seedlings giving us different harvest times.

The other edge has strawberry plants, which were planted from seedlings. We will place straw under the plants to protect the fruits from being spoilt by the soil.

Preparation of the vegetable table:

The soil was a mixture of 1 bag exterior potting soil to 3 bags compost. Mixed in was a few pellets of bounce back. A great organic fertilizer.

The bed was then planted and has been tended and watered daily. Callum is really enjoying it as the radishes have sprouted up already and are ready to be thinned out. Will keep you updated on the progress.

The herb garden as been a great success and yielded many baby tomatoes which we have harvested and collected the seeds ready to plant out again.
